Sarah Shanahan

2022 QEST Garfield Weston Foundation Scholar - Gold & Silversmithing
Northamptonshire

After a ten year career in fashion and textiles, Sarah retrained as a silversmith and for the last ten years has been working as a freelance jeweller, wax carver, and maker of small decorative objects. She works mainly in silver and incorporates precious and semi-precious stones.

A QEST Scholarship will enable Sarah to undertake a bespoke year-long programme with master glass artist, Angela Jarman. Angela will teach Sarah lost-wax glass-casting, a versatile method for making glass pieces in almost any form imaginable, which will complement her existing work in gold and silver and allow her to apply her wax-carving skills in new ways. She plans to incorporate glass into her designs, allowing increased freedom in volume, colour, transparency, texture and form.

I love small details and try to capture the exquisite forms of nature in my wax carving. My aim is to combine elements to evoke mood and feeling in my work.
