Sofia Karakatsanis

2022 QEST Jasper Weldon Scholar - Furniture making
Worcestershire

Sofia is a designer and maker of wooden furniture and sculpture. Using a blend of traditional craft and contemporary techniques, she aims to create arresting pieces of work that will provoke a response.

Sofia gained a foundation diploma in Art & Design, before completing a BA in Interior Products Design. She later did specialist training at Williams & Cleal, on their Fine Furniture Making course, before working for Byron & Gomez as a maker alongside developing her own practice.

Sofia’s QEST Scholarship will allow her to return to Williams & Cleal for a bespoke programme of tuition over 20 weeks. She will build upon her complementary skills such as sketching, CAD and design, with the main focus being on advanced carpentry skills such as steam bending and lamination. She will be creating some speculative pieces of work, the main one being a three-legged lounge chair, which will provide her with a canvas on which she will practice and develop many of her new skills.

My work is currently exploring the affinity between the beautiful and the grotesque, and what gives something value. Perception varies from person to person and I want my work to provoke a response from the individual.
