Traditional Signpainting
Art & Lettering
Spring | 2016

Growing up with a travelling fairground immersed in the visual language of traditional signpainting and art has instilled a strong sense of heritage, preservation and tradition in my work and practice as a signpainter.

Passed down through generations this upbringing has given me an appreciation for the rich history of fairground people and their art, and a wealth of stories that have been told, but not yet archived.

The QEST Scholarship will support the first year of my PhD study that, through traditional signpainting, is working to construct an archive that creates identities for the unsung fairground women through telling their stories. The funding will offer me the opportunity to both gain a strong grounding in my research for the PhD and allow me to continue to explore, test and perfect the skills of the traditional craft.
