Billy Cave

2021 QEST Apprentice - Ceramics
West Yorkshire

Billy is a trainee ceramicist specialising in production pottery, employed by Sunken Studio, under the tutelage of Chris Crawford. He has been awarded a QEST Apprenticeship to study under Chris for eighteen months, during which time they will focus on making everyday, essential items, with forms rooted in function, to a very high standard.

Billy completed a foundation year at Leeds Collage of Art and a Diploma in Visual Arts at West Dean College. He has also studied at Clay College, Stoke-on-Trent, working as a studio technician throughout. He has been working at Sunken Studio since 2020 where he helps with the day-to-day running of the studio, teaches beginner and intermediate classes, and helps Chris to make new work.

Upon finishing his apprenticeship, Billy hopes to continue working for Sunken Studio part-time so he can continue teaching and passing his skills on to others. Simultaneously, he aspires to work as a self-employed potter, making high quality functional ware, such as mugs, jugs and teapots.

I am interested by what’s lost when something is made by a machine rather than a human being. What are these qualities and why are they important?
