Description

Through hand paper making and printmaking using traditional water-based woodblock techniques, Lucy seeks a dialogue with the temporal and transient nature of our existence. Working in collaboration with expansive landscapes and dark skies, Lucy marks seasonal shifts with paper, ink and wood to connect and convene with nature. Observations of the way in which time behaves in remote places have resonated in ritualistic acts of making; meditations on the earth’s rotation, the phases of the moon and our relationship to light and time have inspired performative acts exploring place.

Lucy has recently been elected as an Associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and her work is held in public and private collections including Tate Britain and Yale Centre for British Art.

A QEST Scholarship is supporting a series of workshops and one-to-one sessions, both in the UK and Japan. In the UK, Lucy has learned skills related to foraging and creating natural pigments, inks and dyes to use within her printmaking. In Japan, she will learn to create hyōsō works (hanging scrolls) using her mokuhanga prints, and expand her skills in creating washi-based artworks. The goal is to create a sustainable practice which is in harmony with nature.
