Description
Tom is a sculptor and designer who practices in the space between the fine and decorative arts. He combines ancient and contemporary materials and techniques to create work ranging from individual pieces for private clients, to bespoke installations for interior designers and architects.
He has a particular fascination in the world of Medieval and Renaissance Europe, but also the aesthetic and art of later Japanese makers and artists. Materials range from newly emerging industrial composites to timeless ‘noble’ materials, with an increasing focus on sculpture in stone.
QEST funding will enable Tom to travel to Pietrasanta in Italy to develop his specialist skills in working with marble. He will spend six weeks training under Kyle Smith, who has over 25 years’ experience teaching marble carving workshops. The tuition will be supplemented with visits to local artisans, studios, and marble quarries, using both traditional hand-carving methods and robotic CNC carving, covering the full breadth of possible techniques and approaches to working with marble.
