Jessica Mantoan

2018 QEST Howdens Scholar - Stone Conservation
London

Jessica gained a BSc in Conservation Science from the University of Milan before moving to London, drawn to the city by her fascination with British monuments and the study opportunities at the City & Guilds of London Art School.

After gaining a BA from City & Guilds of London Art School, QEST funding contributed to the fees for Jessica’s Conservation MA, which provided training in the conservation of wood, stone and decorative surfaces and where she focused on the study of conservation mortars containing barium hydroxide.

On graduating, Jessica increased her practical knowledge by working freelance for several conservation companies including Virtu Conservation, Hare & Humphreys and Taylor & Pearce.

She now works as a stone conservator and restorer for PAYE Stonework & Restoration Ltd where she plans and carries out conservation interventions on decorative architectural elements, as well as undertaking the study and physico-chemical investigation of building materials for complex interventions.

I hope to practice the conservation of public art, especially sculpture and stone, at a prestigious London museum; the advanced techniques and material experience I gain on this course will be invaluable.
