Kate Hetherington makes traditional horse collars with a leather outer and straw filling. She started training at 16 years old as an apprentice to master harness maker John McDonald. Now working together, Kate and John make 40 to 70 a year at their premises in Somerset.
Kate, a member of the Society of Master Saddlers and winner of a Worshipful Company of Coachmakers & Coach Harness Makers award, feels the responsibility to act for the future. Herself and John teach courses to current practitioners, many from abroad.
Further afield, Kate has worked on World Horse Welfare pro jects to develop equipment for working horses in Lesotho, Romania and Cambodia and taught a community in Honduras to make a basic collar and harness from local materials.
