Lisi Ashbridge

2019 QEST David Blackburn Scholar - Letter Carving
Wiltshire
Based on her background in visual recognition, art and design, stone letter carver Lisi uses traditional handheld tools to create expressive alternatives to machine cut lettering for sculptures, plaques and memorials. In 2019, QEST funding enabled her to undertake one-to-one tuition with Caroline Webb, one of the leading letter carvers in the country, increasing her typographical awareness, refining her drawing and carving techniques and learning to carve letters in wood, as well as stone.
She is also committed to raising awareness of the craft by being a trustee for the Lettering Arts Trust charity, running courses at the Prince’s Foundation at Highgrove, opening her doors to the public during her local Open Studios, performing public demonstrations and being involved in educational projects at special needs schools.
She is an elected member of the Master Carvers Association and the Lettering Arts Trust.

From a young age, Lisi has always been fascinated by letters and their shapes. Her professional life started off with a degree and PhD in Neuroscience and she did extensive post doctoral research at Oxford University trying to understand how the brain recognises shapes. This interest is still carried on in her work and inspired by themes as diverse as poetry, history, philosophy, science and the landscape, her work makes a dramatic focal point, or a deeply intimate tribute or message.
