Paper and Book Conservation
Conservation & Paper
Spring | 2010

After over 3 years at the Conservation Department of the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust allowed Makiko to obtain formal postgraduate training and a Master of Arts degree in Paper Conservation from Camberwell College of Arts, London, in 2011.

After the successful completion of her MA in Paper Conservation, Makiko carried out several internships in the USA, Japan and UK. She is now working at the National Conservation Service, taking part in both routine and complex preventive and interventive conservation activities. She also works as a freelance conservator, collaborating with other conservators caring for art works on paper.

In the future, Makiko explains that she would like to deepen her knowledge and skills in the conservation of early historical bindings, oriental materials, and friable media on paper and parchment (e.g. chalk, pastel, medieval pigments).
