Ryan McClean
Metal Work
Spring | 2013

Ryan is a silversmith working in Sheffield, he uses a number of traditional techniques. He hand raises vessels from a flat disk and then applies surface decoration to the form. His QEST scholarship enabled him to work with Rod Kelly a master silversmith based in Shetland. During his two weeks in Shetland Ryan honed his chasing skills and worked on a couple new pieces. He also learnt gold inlay and was given advice on all aspects of silversmithing like applying for commissions and working with clients.

Ryan has continued to practice his skills and develop new work. He feels that the QEST Scholarship has enabled him to express his ideas more clearly and has opened his eyes to new ways of working and thinking about design.
