Sophie D’Souza

2010 QEST Scholar - Stained Glass Painting
London

Sophie is a stained glass artist working in West London.  She undertakes both commercial and domestic commissions and has a special interest in ecclesiastical stained glass.

Receiving a QEST Scholarship allowed Sophie to formalise her training through a Postgraduate Certificate in Architectural Glass at Central St Martins. This training, in combination with her first degree in Theology, makes her uniquely qualified to respond to the particular challenges involved designing and making windows for churches.

Since receiving her Scholarship, QEST has offered Sophie the opportunity to exhibit in Fortnum & Mason’s, as part of their Crafting Excellence exhibition, and at Buckingham Palace during the Queen’s Coronation Festival.

My work in churches allows me to combine my love of narrative design with my background in theology. A craft rooted in the past, I use traditional techniques unchanged for 1000 years. I love the way stained glass will paint the room with ever changing light. It seems to have the ability to transport itself from the window into the hearts and minds of the viewer.
