Thea Sanders

2017 QEST Scholar - Knitted Textiles & Upholstery
Somerset

Thea is a knitted textile designer based in Somerset. A graduate of Nottingham Trent University and winner of the Visionary Knitwear Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2013, she uses a hand flat knitting machine to design knit patterns which she then develops into printed interior fabrics. Thea traditionally upholsters antique and vintage furniture and finishes them off with her own printed top fabrics to create bespoke, one-of-a-kind interior pieces. QEST funding supported her training in upholstery at Stewart’s Traditional upholstery in Devon, enabling her to combine her upholstery and knit skills. Thea’s designs are very highly patterned and use bold colours which create statement pieces for the home.

My knitted textiles are worked by hand on a knitting machine. I manipulate individual stitches to create the intricate designs. It was such a thrill to showcase my hybrid craft at a QEST event at the Victoria and Albert Museum and to sell my first unique footstool.
