Thom Morley is a rope access conservator – a specialised job that involves specifying and applying mortars, diagnosing developing problems with historic fabric, repairing stone and doing conservation work often at height. His QEST Emerging Maker Grant will fund his place on the professional development diploma in building conservation at West Dean College. He would like to form his own company in Wales and wants to learn about techniques and methods from around the world to apply in his own practice.
Skilled conservators with rope access capabilities are in demand, as they can save a client on scaffolding costs. Thom is eager to expand his knowledge base, particularly into plaster and timber, to help him make more accurate diagnoses and advice on how to carry out repairs. The courses he has chosen cover conservation of many different materials used in the heritage environment and are tutored by some of the best conservators in their respective fields. Through further studies and connections with a wider professional network, he’ll strengthen his ability and expertise in preserving historic buildings for the future.
