Lucy Newman

2026 QEST Scholarship - Embroidery
London

Lucy Newman is a hand embroiderer, blending traditional craft with digital innovation. Her QEST Scholarship supports her MA in Textiles at the Royal College of Art, where she will refine her techniques, explore new materials, and experiment with processes that utilise cutting-edge technology. Lucy’s work often addresses themes related to climate change and environmental issues, highlighting the distortions in nature caused by human intervention. Her recent work explores distortion and instability through the experience of vestibular imbalance, translating a disrupted sense of equilibrium into embroidered works that feel both bodily and uncertain.

The MA programme will provide Lucy with the opportunity to immerse herself in practice-led research, gaining expert guidance and critique to elevate her work. She also plans to share her enhanced skills through teaching and workshops, helping to ensure the continuity and evolution of hand embroidery. By making the craft more accessible and appealing to a wider audience, she hopes to foster an appreciation for embroidery among young artists. Through exhibitions and public projects, Lucy aims to build greater demand for hand-embroidered works in the UK, showcasing their relevance and beauty.

Becoming a QEST Scholar marks a major step in my development as an artist. QEST’s support has made it possible for me to take up my place on the Textiles MA at the Royal College of Art, where I can deepen my practice and continue pushing the possibilities of hand embroidery as a contemporary art form.
