Abigail Carter

2021 QEST Radcliffe Trust Scholar - Hand Embroidery
London

Having first worked as a translation project manager, Abigail decided to follow her passion and enrolled at the London College of Fashion to study Garment Making, before studying at Newham College where she was awarded an Extended Certificate in Bespoke Tailoring. While still working as a self-employed translator, she attended the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) for five years, gaining her Technical Hand Embroidery Qualification in July 2020. She has also done courses in Corset-Making for the Theatre (at RADA) and a teacher training course, which will help with her aspirations to teach the next generation of hand embroiderers.

Currently enrolled on the Future Tutors Programme at the RSN, a QEST Scholarship will support the second and third years of her studies. Upon completion of the course, Abigail plans to launch her own embroidery business, focused on teaching and selling embroidery kits.

Embroidery is one of this country’s beautiful heritage crafts and should be safeguarded for everyone; I firmly believe that it is through teaching that we can best achieve this.
