Vivienne Lake

2024 QEST Scholar - Embroidery
London

Vivienne is a well-known London-based milliner and accessories designer. Her primary career focus has been making hats for fashion designers, celebrities and cultural events, often turning to collaboration in her creative process.

Vivienne now wants to dig deeper into hand embroidery, learning a whole new skill set that could also enhance her millinery designs through embellishment. A QEST Scholarship will allow Vivienne to study a Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework. The course will cover core hand embroidery, Jacobean Crewel Work, canvas stitch, silk shading and goldwork.

The QEST funding will also see Vivienne undergo an online course at the Royal School of Needlework where she will learn how to mount finished work on board using traditional conservation techniques.

In the future, Vivienne aims to turn embroidery pieces into artworks that she can sell or use as exhibition pieces. She’d also like to work on community textile projects and pass on her skills to others through masterclasses and college teaching roles.
