Cass Power is undertaking a two-year QEST apprenticeship with photographic conservator Simon Fleury in London. With a background in photography, Cass will train in advanced conservation techniques across diverse photographic processes, from 19th-century daguerreotypes to contemporary digital works, and will receive mentorship and placements at institutions such as Tate Britain.
Cass will learn condition assessment, treatment planning, stabilisation, preventive conservation, documentation, ethical decision making and collection management. Hands on work and regular practice will build technical skill, judgement and further confidence across diverse processes and formats.
The programme aims to develop comprehensively trained photographic conservators, addressing a critical UK skills shortage. In time, Cass plans to mentor future trainees, contribute to training programmes and help broaden public understanding and care of photographic heritage.
