Martha is a specialist in embroidery and embellishment and is now on a mission to become a textiles conservator.
Martha graduated with Honours in textiles at Loughborough University before entering the museum industry where she has worked for the last three years. From making display mounts for garments to installing major exhibitions, Martha has immersed herself in the museum world and currently works for the Victoria and Albert Museum as a technician.
She wishes to bring together her museum experience, dress history knowledge and sewing abilities to become a textile conservator. She believes her QEST grant will be ‘life-changing’, supporting her crucial further education.
Her funding will secure her place on the Textiles Conservation MPhil course at the University of Glasgow. Taught by leading practitioners, the prestigious two-year course includes a thorough teaching programme, covering specialist treatments, ethical standards and key science, all whilst working with textile artefacts from museums across the UK.
As a conservator, Martha wishes to preserve historical textiles, a significant however previously overlooked part of history, and to be part of the conversation as the sector progresses.
