Cathryn Shilling

2025 QEST Winch Design Scholar - Glasswork, Kiln Formed Glass
London

Cathryn Shilling is a London-based glass artist whose distinctive sculptural works are celebrated for their innovative use of kiln formed and blown glass. Originally trained in Graphic Design at the Central School of Art and Design, Cathryn’s creative path evolved during her time in the USA, where she studied stained glass. On her return to the UK she studied kiln formed and blown glass before establishing her practice in 2009. Her signature ‘glass cloth’ pieces, created using Venetian cane techniques, explore light, texture and movement, transforming glass into dynamic, tactile forms.

With QEST funding, Cathryn is expanding her technical expertise through advanced training with three master craftspeople: water, oil and glass gilding with Richard Walker in Hampshire, image and glass processes with Helen Slater Stokes in Oxfordshire, and airbrush and glass painting with Opal Seabrook in Hertfordshire.

This training will support her ambition to continuing creating work that is both innovative and sustainable. Cathryn is a Trustee of the Contemporary Glass Society, a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, and is committed to supporting emerging makers and promoting inclusivity within this craft.

I am committed to reducing my environmental impact both at home and in my studio, and I continuously look for ways to make my practice more sustainable. I am very grateful to have received a QEST Scholarship as this will enable me to learn new skills and knowledge that support this goal, while giving me the creative freedom to make new exciting work.
