Filipa Cardoso

2022 QEST Henkel Apprentice - Millinery
London

Filipa gained a BA in Art from Universidade do Porto, Portugal and her fine arts background is a prominent influence on her work as a milliner. After moving to London, she completed the HNC in Millinery at Kensington and Chelsea College. She searches for a purified form of beauty, simplicity and harmony in her work, while using classic millinery materials. She has experience working for a number of renowned milliners including Vivienne Lake, Sarah Cant and Sarah Marshall. A QEST Apprenticeship will support the further development of her skills with a two-year programme of training with Sarah Marshall at John Boyd Hats.

Filipa will be taught by Sarah and work in the studio and adjacent shop. She will learn technical millinery skills and, at the same time, customer service and design skills. She will learn traditional couture millinery techniques in a variety of specialist materials such as felt, buckram, straw, silk, feathers and veiling for example silk covered buckram pillboxes. She hopes to become part of the new generation of milliners that uses traditional British millinery techniques in their work, in an innovative and contemporary way.

I regard millinery as part of visual culture, a kind of body-art. Prompted by this, most of my collections are based on art movements aiming to interpret fashion as a form of art.
