Grant Nelson

2021 QEST Horlock Educational Trust Apprentice - Farriery
West Lothian

Grant is an apprentice farrier at Newall Farrier Services, under the tutelage of David Newall. When he first approached David about work, the experienced farrier immediately recognised Grant’s enthusiasm and offered him a part-time apprenticeship. At the same time Grant studied part-time on the pre-farrier training course at Oatridge College. After successfully completing the course, and gaining three forgework qualifications, he began his full time apprenticeship in March 2019. QEST funding will now support the next three years of Grant’s four-year apprenticeship.

The training plan will take Grant from learning competent horse-handling skills, removing shoes and cleaning horses’ feet; through acquiring and developing forge skills, learning different styles of shoe, how to make them, and how they are used; all the way to finishing and fitting shoes with an advanced understanding of equine anatomy.

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to become a Farrier.  I was delighted to secure an apprenticeship with Newall Farrier Services and achieving funding support from QEST has helped to ensure my dream becomes a reality.
