Hanny Newton

2023 QEST Broderers' Company Scholar - Embroidery
Shropshire

Hanny is a textile artist known for her contemporary approach to metal thread embroidery. She studied at the Royal School of Needlework in 2013 and now creates bespoke large-scale projects for hotels, restaurants and private residences internationally.

With a QEST 2023 Scholarship, Hanny aims to gain a deeper understanding of the historical use of straw as an embroidery fibre and explore its potential as a natural and sustainable alternative to gold thread. She wants to initiate a dialogue about the concept of preciousness, particularly in the context of the current environmental crisis. Additionally, she interested in the importance of preserving the knowledge and skills of straw embroidery, which are on the verge of being lost. She will study with QEST Scholar Veronica Main MBE, Jenny Adin-Christie and Ottilia Leeman, as well as undertaking a study trip to Switzerland.

Exploring the potential of straw and other plant fibres as an embroidery thread will allow me to develop a deeper connection to my materials, and to the world around me. I want to open up a conversation about what is precious, coming from a craft with such associations to precious metals as goldwork, at a time where its more important than ever to consider our connection to the planet as makers.
