Louis Curtis

2023 QEST Benefact Trust Scholar - Historic Timber Conservation
Hertfordshire

Louis began training as a carpenter and joiner in 2006 and later gained a 1st class degree in Historic Building Conservation from the Building Craft College and Kingston University. In 2014 he set up Breakspear Conservation to carry out repair works to historic buildings with a focus on timber-frames. He has carried out conservation works in the UK and abroad for organisations such as The National Trust, Canal and River Trust, Palace of Westminster, Parochial Church Councils, community groups and private clients.  Louis blends traditional tools and carpentry techniques with modern conservation methodology.

A 2023 QEST Scholarship will support Louis in an MSc in Timber Building Conservation at the  Weald and Downland Living Museum in conjunction with the University of York. This will enable him to further his skills and understanding of timber conservation by combining practical craft skill with theoretical knowledge, delivered by leading industry specialists, and all accessed in a unique learning environment.

I am passionate about historic timber-framed buildings and their conservation.   My sensitive approach to repair helps ensure the historic and cultural significance of these buildings can be enjoyed by future generations.
