Tozer

2025 QEST Scholar - Signwriting, Glass Gilding
Bristol

Tozer is a traditional signwriter and founder of Tozer Signs, based in Bristol. Since 2015, she has been creating hand-painted signage for commercial and private clients, specialising in gold leaf glass gilding, murals, fascias, and vehicle work. Her practice is rooted in traditional skills and materials, brought into the present day through dynamic commissions that range from intricate heirloom pieces to large-scale building signage.

QEST will support Tozer through a series of one-to-one training sessions to deepen her expertise in key areas of her craft. She will study calligraphy and blackletter with Ellie Heywood (Elettr), signmaking and carpentry with Thomas Payne (Thomas Paints), and advanced reverse glass techniques with David Adrian Smith MBE.

Passionate about sharing her craft with the public, Tozer regularly shares the process behind her work and has long-term ambitions to open a walk-in traditional sign shop — a space for demonstrations, exhibitions, and workshops that celebrate traditional signwriting. In 2024, she organised ‘Burds of the Brush’, an event which brought together 60 female signwriters from around the world to collaborate, learn and celebrate the craft.

After a decade of dedication towards my craft, QEST’s funding and the training it will provide me will allow me to break through to a new level. I’m so excited to see where it will take me and my work.
