A glimpse into Ukrainian Icon Painting

March 1st 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Valeriia Kravchenko, Marharyta Khrebtenko and QEST Apprentice Ahneta Shashkova present a talk on the history, materials and techniques of Ukrainian icons.

Ahneta’s talk is based around her postgraduate doctoral studies at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture: “Iсons of I.S. Izhakevych 1940-1950. Features of attribution and restoration”. She will focus on the attribution and conservation of icons by Ivan Yizhakevych from the 1940s and 1950s, held within the collections of three functioning Kyiv churches.  These icons are rich in unusual techniques and characterised by very distinctive changes made by the artist. Yizhakevych’s art is also a unique window onto Ukrainian genetic memory as he included his relatives and fellow villagers in his works.

A talk by the British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers.
