Decorex: Future Heritage
October 10th 2021 - October 13th 2021
Future Heritage is the leading showcase for emerging and established talents in British craft. It has pioneered the promotion of contemporary craft to the wider interior design industry. Each emerging designer creates new, one-off pieces to be exhibited at Decorex, pushing their processes and practice in new and exciting directions.
Curated by Corinne Julius, the 7th edition of this showcase will bring together 10 makers, including QEST Garfield Weston Foundation Scholar and leatherworker Frances Pinnock and QEST William Parker Scholar and blacksmith Daniel Freyne.
Traditionally using oak tanned leather from the only surviving British tannery to create her work, Frances produced extraordinary asymmetrical leather vessels that she makes using adapted hand-stitching saddle-making techniques. For Future Heritage, she is making even bigger scale works including a large sculptural piece.
After recently graduating Daniel uses traditional blacksmithing techniques that he pushes in new ways to create metal vessels, which have the look of ceramic or leather and cry out to be touched. They range in scale from the handheld to the majestic. Daniel is making a series of over-sized ‘Transition’ metal vessels to show at Decorex, alongside another new series of mixed-sized vessels called ‘Perceptions’.
