From flower to fabric: embroidering florals with Lora Avedian

November 19th 2022 @ 10:30 am - November 20th 2022 @ 5:30 pm

The RA has a long history of botanical drawing and floral painting. Founding member of the Royal Academy, Mary Moser was greatly celebrated for her flower paintings. The RA’s Collection boasts a variety of botanical drawings and paintings of flowers, all of which will provide rich source material for this weekend workshop on floral design.

On this weekend course, textile and embroidery artist Lora Avedian will lead participants from floral drawing to realising those drawings. Participants will be using scrap and vintage materials, along with embroidery threads and ribbons from Lora’s own studio. They will learn how to create pleated fabrics for three dimensional petals in combination with hand embroidery techniques, bringing floral designs to life. Students will apply these embellishment techniques to fabric to create a versatile textile artwork which can be applied to clothing, soft furnishings or simply left as a wall hanging.
