New Ceramics – Alice Walton

June 11th 2022 - August 27th 2022

An exhibition of new works by talented ceramicist Alice Walton.

Alice has an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art (2018) and a 1st Class BA in Wood, Metal and Ceramics & Plastics from the University of Brighton.

Her work has received international acclaim- she has exhibited at, amongst others, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Modern, Make Hauser and Wirth, and Collect 2020. She was awarded the Wedgwood Prize at the British Ceramics Biennale in 2019. In 2017, she was awarded the Sir Eduardo Paolozzi Travel Scholarship and in 2018, was awarded a QEST Scholarship.

Alice uses coloured clay, in its various plastic states, to gradually, in separate pieces, form complex, layered abstract objects. The pieces that result from this process exist in a balance of calm and meditative, complex and playful. They are a process of repetitive and time-consuming mark making with clay, negating the fast-paced and frenzied digital life, and instead celebrating process and craft.  The shapes and patterns within her sculptures reference everyday imagery and objects which through familiarity, become repetitive and pattern-like. Alice uses drawings from memory as well as collaging photographs of landscapes and everyday scenes- consequently her work references memory, imagination, and reality.
