Alex Hunter

2026 QEST Scholarship - Millwrighting and Heritage Restoration
Norfolk

Alex Hunter specialises in the conservation and restoration of traditional wind and water mills across the UK. Combining skills in woodwork, metalwork and heritage engineering, he works to keep historic mills in sound condition and where possible to bring them back into working order.

Originally trained as a traditional wooden boatbuilder, Alex brings a deep understanding of complex timber construction to his craft. Millwrights require a niche set of expertise and with very few dedicated practitioners left in the UK these skills are not easily acquired. Through his QEST Scholarship Alex will continue to collaborate with mill specialists and use his training to develop practical skills in metal machining and fabrication, pattern making for castings, blacksmithing and developing his skill as a specialist carpenter.

The Cockpit Professional Development Programme will enable Alex to further develop his millwrighting business, Hunter & May, strengthening his expertise in contracting, site management, marketing, and the increasing planning and administrative responsibilities required to meet industry standards. He will continue to build and strengthen relationships with organisations such as the SPAB, local authorities, national heritage bodies and fellow mill specialists to support the growth of his business and his wider ambition to elevate the craft of millwrighting.

Mills are an important part of our collective heritage. This grant not only represents a massive boost for my practice and career but also for the future of mills and millwrighting in the UK.
