Alice Biolo is a jewellery artist from Padova, Italy, now based in Glasgow. Alice’s works are intricate, handcrafted structures sometimes comprising hundreds of components designed to move or interact. These bespoke kinetic pieces delve into themes of trauma, insecurity, pain, and grief. Her approach is unconventional, using her expertise in laser welding and alternative stone-setting techniques to guide her precise metalwork and construction. She describes her practice as balancing technical innovation, conceptual exploration, and careful, considered craft.
Her QEST Emerging Maker Grant will fund two intensive workshops. The first is with master goldsmith Giovanni Corvaja focused on producing bespoke gold alloys and manipulating fine wires to create complex moving elements. The second is with Gigi Mariani, a specialist in Niello, a black metallic alloy that is uncommon in contemporary jewellery. Alice plans to continue exhibiting regularly, with events such as Collect, Goldsmith’s Fair and Homo Faber in her sights. Beyond refining and deepening her own technical skills, she plans to build a collaborative studio supporting other makers and sharing her knowledge through mentoring and teaching.
