Alice Cunningham

2024 QEST Crown Paints Scholar - Stone carving
Somerset

Alice is a Somerset-based sculptor and is passionate about using sustainable materials as much as possible in the creation of her artworks. Collaboration lies at the heart of Alice’s practice – this has included past projects with the Royal Society of Sculptors, University of Bristol, City of Vittorio Veneto, Italy and the Bank of England.

Alice is eager to enhance her stone carving skills and establish fundamental best practices in working with stone and tools. A QEST Scholarship will enable her to expand her understanding of stone as well as the sculptural potential of clay.

Alice’s training involves four parts – one-on-one training with QEST Alumni and stone carver Thomas Waugh, renowned earth builder Becky Little, expert clay practitioner Rodney Harris, as well as participation in a marble workshop in Pietrasandra, Italy.

Alice wants to use her newly acquired skills to handle larger and more intricate stone carving commissions. She also aspires to take on more ambitious collaborative projects, environmentally focused commissions, contribute to public art installations and community-led design projects and deliver workshops.

I have always had a love affair with rocks and 10 years ago while working in Italy I developed my passion for the process of stone carving – it is a meditative and strenuous endeavour yet hugely rewarding.
