Beatrice Searle

2024 QEST DBR Ltd Emerging Maker - Letter Carving
Perth & Kinross

Beatrice is a letter cutter in stone and wood. She lives and works in Perthshire, Scotland. She is a Fine Art graduate of Newcastle University, a qualified cathedral stone mason and former student of the European Lettering Institute in Brugge.

Her QEST training will enable her to become a fully competent and more confident maker who can “hold her own in the professional letter carving world.”

Beatrice will receive one-on-one training with master craftsman Robbie Schneider, with whom she will develop the letter forms integral to her craft, from calligraphic hands to the modern Germanic carving traditions. She will explore letter design for carving, expand her knowledge of a wide range of British stones and woods, and advance her skills in complex layout and letter refinement with vector drawing software.

In the future, Beatrice hopes to contribute to bigger and more ambitious projects including memorials, architectural lettering and public works. She’d also like to inspire other aspiring letter cutters to take up the craft.

I aim to find a harmony between words, material, form and pattern, and combine this with sensitive and skilful tool use, to make works of inscriptional letter cutting that have communicative power and beauty.
