Fann Chau

2024 QEST Apprentice - Glasswork, Glass Blowing
London

Fann is a glassblower apprentice working with Michael Ruh Studio. QEST funding enables a further two years of training focusing on mastering essential glassblowing techniques. With a specific emphasis on freeform tableware and lighting, Fann will develop skills in shaping, colouring, and finishing. She will also learn the day-to-day operations of a production glassblowing studio, gaining experience in equipment handling and business management.

Having worked with Michael for a year, Fann will now increase her studio time, allowing for more focused skill training and mentorship. This apprenticeship provides the foundation needed to assist in production work and deepens Fann’s understanding of running a commercial glass studio.

Fann aims to contribute to the UK craft sector by preserving and promoting traditional glassblowing while fostering creativity and innovation. With the number of UK glass studios in decline, Fann’s goal is to strengthen the glass community and inspire greater appreciation for the craft. Ultimately, this apprenticeship will help Fann build a successful career in glassmaking while supporting the sustainability of the UK studio glass movement.

Glassblowing is a challenging craft to master, as the molten glass gets both intensely hot and cools rapidly. However, these unique characteristics of the material fascinate me, driving my desire to learn more about it. Over the next two years, I hope to absorb as much knowledge as possible from Michael and continue to hone my skills.
