Greg Kent

2024 QEST Turners’ Company Scholar - Woodwork, woodturning
Lancashire

Greg is a woodturner who combines traditional techniques with modern innovation to create unique pieces that challenge the conventions of the craft. His work explores the creative potential of wood, using green wood and sand blasting to push the boundaries of what is possible in woodturning. By experimenting with non-round forms and using indigenous wood, including storm-fallen trees, Greg exposes the beauty of the material through each finely turned piece.

Greg has created a bespoke package of training to evolve his practice. Through QEST’s funding, he will work with master woodturner Phil Irons to refine his woodturning techniques and learn about wood properties with Alain Mailland, expanding his creative possibilities. Additionally, he will work with Keith Clark to deepen his understanding of deep hollowing techniques. Greg will also study steam bending and wood finishes at the London School of Furniture.

With his passion for sustainability at the heart of his practice, Greg aims to share his knowledge, inspire others, and offer training to encourage new directions in woodturning.

Being enabled to pursue excellence in woodturning and sculpting, as a result of a QEST Scholarship, will allow me to produce fine art which has been created by nature and is then revealed by a craftsman.
