Jacky Oliver

2024 QEST Scholar - Metalwork
London

Jacky is a metalworker based at Cockpit Bloomsbury, creating sculptural pieces that combine the strength of blacksmithing with the delicate refinement of jewellery work, giving her objects an unexpected lightness.

QEST funding will enable Jacky to expand her skills with a bespoke training package, taking place across England, Wales, and Canada. She will study micro arc welding with Kye-Yeon Son at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, refine her sheet metal manipulation skills with QEST Scholar Rauni Higson, and learn creative fastening techniques with John Norgate at West Dean College. Additionally, she will explore patination and colouring with Adi Toch. Following her training, Jacky aims to develop more ambitious, three-dimensional forms while incorporating environmentally friendly techniques to colour her work.

A passionate teacher, Jacky has taught widely across the UK, inspiring the next generation of makers. She founded the Design Crafts BA(Hons) course at De Montfort University and has worked with over 40 schools, including those with SEN and SEMH pupils. Jacky continues to support teachers through the Crafts Council and aims to help young people gain creative confidence and craft skills.

I love exploring the endless possibilities that different metals offer, both in constructing forms and communicating ideas.
