Jamie Ryan is undertaking an MSc in Timber Building Conservation at the Weald & Downland Living Museum in Chichester, supported by QEST. The Museum provides specialist education for historic building techniques and the course will explore the science, techniques, and materials needed to conserve timber buildings and objects. During his time on the course Jamie will also undertake the role of lead joinery conservator on the V&A’s Kochi Ceiling project with Orbis Conservation.
Working across site and workshop, Jamie specialises in repairing timber frames and heritage joinery. Using traditional methods alongside modern machinery, he restores historic structures by carefully integrating new timber to make them structurally sound once again. His portfolio includes figurehead conservation for the Box Museum in Plymouth, work on the Cupola Room at Kensington Palace, and repairs to a medieval barn in Faversham.
Looking ahead, Jamie hopes to expand his conservation practice and in time focus on training the next generation of heritage joiners. He’s passionate about making the field more inclusive and ensuring that people from all backgrounds see conservation as a rewarding, achievable career.
