Joshua Hill

2018 QEST Scholarship - Wall Painting Conservation

Joshua chose a career in conservation to marry his passions for art and science. After a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, he undertook the MA in Conservation of Wall Painting at the Courtauld Institute of Art. QEST provided support for the final year of this three-year professional training.

Joshua is now teaching at UCL as well as working as freelance wall painting conservator.

The UK may not commonly be associated with wall painting, however in England alone there are over 2000 buildings with surviving medieval painting. Their significance depends on their connection with the structure for which they were created, and their care relies on a wealth of specialist craft skills.
