Kathie Murphy

2024 QEST Scholar - Jewellery
East Sussex

Kathie started making jewellery at 14 years old and continued on to gain a degree at Middlesex University, and a post-graduate degree from the Glasgow School of Art. She specialises in colourful resin jewellery, and for the greater part of her career has explored and developed the possibilities of this material. Kathie has written two books and her work can be found in the collections of the National Museum of Scotland and Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art.

Kathie now wants to elevate her knowledge of working with hard stone and precious metals which will allow her to explore and develop new pieces of jewellery with confidence. After receiving the help of a QEST Scholarship, Kathie learned to improve her silver and gold soldering by training with Anna Gordon and Jean Scott Moncrieff, alongside partaking in a stone carving workshop with QEST Alumni Charlotte de Syllas.

Her goal is to create a new body of work and participate in shows to widen her audience. She’d also like to pass on her skills through teaching at a college or on a one-on-one basis.

Jewellery making has been the greater part of my life, I have continually developed what I have learnt through using a wide variety of materials to create individual and colourful pieces that people enjoy wearing, as well as passing on my craft to others through teaching, writing and exhibiting. My QEST scholarship has been an invaluable time of expanding and improving all of the above.
