Kathryn Sanders

2019 QEST Scholar - Embroidery
Hertfordshire

From Chartered Engineer to Embroiderer; Kathryn has turned her life upside down to follow her passion. After 4 years of leisure classes, she became so enthralled that she has relocated from Scotland to join the Future Tutor course at the Royal School of Needlework and pursue a career as a professional embroiderer.

The QEST Scholarship is supporting her final years of study, allowing Kathryn to focus fully on the course’s creative challenges. Consistently meeting the highest standard, she continues to explore a wide variety of hand embroidery techniques, including goldwork, canvas work and silk shading.

Kathryn plans to share her enthusiasm for embroidery through the development of personally inspired designs and teaching classes in different techniques around the UK. She also aspires to work on the restoration and conservation of historic items, support parishes in the care of ecclesiastical linens and undertake other embroidery commissions.

Embroidery is a very versatile art form that can be used in so many different ways, to create all kinds of styles and effects. Despite this it continues to be under appreciated; something I am keen to help change.
