Natsuko Matsunaga

2026 QEST Scholarship - Art & Illustration
London

Illustrator Natsuko Matsunaga (professionally Natsko Seki) creates wall art, editorial pieces, advertising, and books for clients worldwide. She specialises in digitally created landscapes by collaging her own photographs, scanned papers and line drawings. Her scholarship will fund an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art and help her expand into children’s book making. She moved to the UK 25 years ago and is interested in highlighting the experiences of people from different cultural backgrounds.

Natsuko is known for her cityscapes that bring the unique spirit of a place to life in a playful way. These have been published by Louis Vuitton Malletier and Phaidon Press and are held in permanent collections including the Bath World Heritage Centre’s. Her interest in making children’s books comes from running a Japanese reading group and a small Japanese library at her local church since her son was young. The MA will help her enhance her illustration and storytelling skills, particularly in hand drawing, allowing her to tackle more complex themes.

Being awarded a QEST Scholarship is a transformative opportunity for me. It will allow me to enhance my illustration and storytelling skills, enabling me to explore more complex themes in my work. Returning to study at this point in my career is both exciting and energising, offering the freedom to experiment, take creative risks, and learn new techniques. I am incredibly grateful for QEST’s support.
