Samuel is a self-taught jeweller and silversmith from Northumberland, now based in Cockpit, London. His work blends contemporary design with inspiration from ancient art.
QEST funding will support Samuel’s training on two traditional Japanese silversmithing courses at the Aoyama School of Jewellery and Metalsmithing in Tokyo. Firstly, he’ll learn traditional silversmithing with master Koichi Io, and secondly, chasing and engraving with master Wataru Yamazaki. During his three-month course, Samuel will have access to the school’s workshops, allowing him to practice and refine his skills further. Through his studies, Samuel hopes to enhance his technique and craftsmanship, refining the fluidity, texture, and detailed patterns of his pieces. He aims to craft truly unique silverware by combining these traditional Japanese techniques with his own personalised specialisms.
Samuel has exhibited at the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair and within galleries such as The Scottish Gallery. With a focus on sustainability and precision, he hopes to push the boundaries of silversmithing. Ultimately, Samuel plans to pass on his expertise to future generations, ensuring that the craft of silversmithing and goldsmithing remains vibrant and relevant for years to come.
