Trevor Cain

2010 QEST Scholar - Dolls House Conservation & Restoration
Essex

For over 20 years, Trevor has been bringing vintage dolls houses back to life. His QEST Scholarship enabled him to hone these skills and look at the more technical side of conservation by studying for an MA in Surface Conservation.

Dolls house restoration incorporates cabinet making, paper conservation, fabric conservation, archiving, gilding and paint techniques. In 2013 Trevor exhibited a restored replica of The Queen’s Childhood ‘Little House’: Y Bwthyn Bach, within the ground of Buckingham Palace, as part of The Coronation Festival.

Trevor continues to restore dolls houses of all ages. His MA also gave him the opportunity to train as a Design and Technology teacher and he is now the Head of Design at a secondary school in Essex.

I am continually thankful to QEST. My masters degree in conservation helped reignite my love of making but more importantly the need to let others know of the invaluable skills that are slowly disappearing. I am now teaching these skills to the next generation of cabinet makers and designers.
