Zac Weinberg

2024 QEST Scholar - Glass work
Tyne & Wear

Zac is a glass artist based in Sunderland. Working primarily with glass, he leverages the material’s inherent qualities in assembled objects that straddle the void between form and function.

Originally from America, Zac received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the US and Europe.

QEST funding will enable Zac to take a deep dive into the nuances of cold-working: the cutting, grinding and polishing of glass objects. His Scholarship consists of four training activities – he will travel to the US to work with Karsten Oaks, a professional cold-worker in the Pacific North West, as well as exploring traditional glass cutting techniques with diamond and stone wheels through a masterclass with Patrick Roth at Bild-Werk Frauenau, and one-to-one training at Cumbria Crystal.

Zac intends to use his new skills to both increase efficiency within the studio and to enhance forthcoming sculptural pieces by adding surface texture and patterning. In the future he hopes to open a studio setup with his wife (and fellow QEST Scholar) Joanna Manousis.

I am interested in how a transparent glass vessel can at once provide structure and a method of display for its contents.
