Hammer Forming Cylinders with Grant McCaig

This course is aimed at those interested in small-working, developing silversmithing skills or simply interested in challenging existing jewellery skills by working on a larger scale.

Grant will introduce you to seaming; a fundamental silversmithing skill, which allows you to create simple shallow or deep, cylindrical forms from flat sheet. In this course you will learn how to calculate your metal needs for your cylinder, explore and practice the best ways to form up the cylindrical form from flat sheet and take control of large scale soldering. From these basic cylindrical forms, the possible outcomes are many and varied. Using hammering techniques, you will explore ways to shape and create form through practical workshop based sessions.

You will be encouraged to practise and explore the potential of the techniques shown before commencing work on your own design. Come prepared with a design or take a more organic approach and allow the practice days to inform your final design.
