QEST Are Hiring: Freelance Digital Artist-Designer

Thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund QEST wishes to
appoint a digital creative to co-produce resources with our project team and young people
for our new two-year project Tradition in Transition: Youth Journeys Through Heritage Craft.

The Project
As QEST marks 35 years of championing master craftspeople and the intangible heritage
craft skills they develop, Tradition in Transition: Youth Journeys Through Heritage Craft
looks ahead; bridging gaps in access, knowledge, and careers for underrepresented young
people aged 16–25.
The project aims to:

• Expand inclusive access to heritage craft skills, training, and career opportunities
  for underrepresented youth.
• Build youth leadership through mentoring, co-creation, and intergenerational
  exchange.
• Strengthen the visibility and sustainability of heritage crafts through digital legacy
  and regional collaboration.

  Across three strands the project will work with partner organisations across the UK to
  explore the traditional skills of local areas, and to support young people to take their first
  steps in acquiring skills for themselves to support crafts into the future.
• CraftLab – will deliver workshops with local businesses and master craftspeople,
  supporting young participants to document craft heritage in their area and share
  with their peers through a craft event.
• Craft Kickstarter – will support young people to take the first steps in gaining skills
  training or vital equipment, alongside mentoring from professionals and peers.
• Craft Traditions Library – will begin to build a digital library documenting craft
  skills for a young audience.
  
  The Brief
  This appointment is for an artist-designer to work with participants during the CraftLab strand
  of the project to develop resources that will form the basis of the Craft Traditions Library, you
  will also contribute to the design of the Library and create a package of assets that can be
  used to expand the resources after the close of this project.
  You will be working with small groups of young people, aged 16-25, in 3 locations
  (Blackburn, Sheffield and Sleaford), helping them to develop resources for their peers that
  reflect on the local history of intangible cultural heritage, and sharing craft skills for the
  future.
  Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
• Running creative workshops for 16-25 year olds.
• Developing digital resources aimed at young audiences.
• Creating a suite of digital assets that can be used to promote the project and
  resources online.
• Working with QEST’s Communications Manager to develop a user-interface for the
  Craft Traditions Library.
• Liaising with QEST’s existing web development consultants to ensure seamless
  integration with the current website.
• Adhere to QEST’s safeguarding, privacy, sustainability and EDI policies.
  You should have:
• Experience with digital design tools for image and video editing, with an
  understanding of UX principles and digital accessibility best practice.
• Experience of co-production with a wide range of audiences, particularly young
  people and those facing barriers to inclusion.
• A strong understanding of the principles of equality, diversity, inclusion and
  access.
• Experience of working directly with web developers.
• Public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
• Knowledge or enthusiasm for the heritage, crafts, or education sectors.
