Genevieve Sweeney

2026 QEST Scholarship - Knitwear
Hertfordshire

A knitter since the age of five, Genevieve Sweeney is a luxury British knitwear designer who wants to show traditional skills can thrive within a contemporary, commercially successful practice. She has a deep commitment to heritage craft, combining traditional techniques with modern design across fashion and accessories. Her QEST Scholarship will support hands-on training in specialisms such as linking, frame knitting, invisible finishing and hand intarsia – skills she sees as vital for safeguarding British knitwear traditions as a living, breathing practice.

Genevieve has created a brand devoted to traditional knit construction, high-quality finishing, and responsible design, working with UK-spun natural yarns. Her collection is made solely in the UK, with around 40% produced in-house at her Hertfordshire studio. She shares hand processes with her customers to teach the difference between fast and slow design. Her interest in master-level knitwear skills is urgent, as she is aware many practitioners are reaching retirement age. Once she has upskilled, she would like to offer training and apprenticeships, nurturing a new generation of knitters committed to quality and longevity.

This scholarship connects the links in a disappearing chain. It gives me the time to learn heritage knitwear techniques from the masters while they’re still here, and apply structure to pass them on in my own studio, then to the next generation through apprenticeships.
