Andrea is a kiltmaker based in Moray, Scotland, who champions both historic and contemporary styles with a passion for elevating the endangered craft. Through her QEST Scholarship, Andrea will expand her skills by working with four master craftspeople. She will study handwoven trims and embellishments with Christopher McEvoy, natural dyeing with Cavan Jayne McPherson, linen weaving with Dr. Lynne Hocking, and leatherwork with QEST Scholar, Mia Sabel of Sabel Saddlery.
Andrea’s work is deeply rooted in collaborative practices, having worked with leatherworkers, spinners, dyers, knitters, and other artisans to incorporate their skills into her creations. She is committed to showcasing the kilt as a dynamic craft, with potential to reach broader audiences and gain wider recognition. A key part of her practice is mentoring, as she has employed and trained part-time kiltmakers through the IV36 Initiative, which supports local people and vulnerable adults in creative, community-based workshops.
Andrea’s long-term vision includes pushing her craft to couture levels, exhibiting her work in galleries, and fostering a regenerative, sustainable model that can be applied to other crafts.
