Jackie is a woven textile designer based in Cheshire, eager to master the craft of traditional hand-stitched kiltmaking. She has been weaving for more than seven years and started her own business in 2020, also offering workshops and training to weavers of all levels.
Initially specialising in handwoven bags and accessories, Jackie is in the early stages of developing a clothing range based on a zero-waste philosophy with the kilt being a key item in this collection.
Her QEST funding will allow her to learn kiltmaking so she can combine it with handwoven tartan to showcase both crafts. Jackie will be taught by Scottish kiltmaker Paula Duncan, enabling her to produce three hand stitched kilts for a man, woman and child using three different weights of tartan and four different pleating styles.
Teaching will cover taking measurements, pleating methods, stitching, horsehair reinforcement, linings, buckles and accessories. In the long term, Jackie plans to develop more exhibition work, write a book and expand her workshops into organisations such as schools and care homes.
