Jackie is a woven textile designer based in Cheshire, eager to master the craft of traditional hand-stitched kiltmaking. She has been weaving for more than seven years and started her own business in 2020, also offering workshops and training to weavers of all levels.
Initially specialising in handwoven bags and accessories, Jackie is currently developing a clothing range based on a zero-waste philosophy with the kilt being a key item in this collection.
Her QEST funding allowed her to learn kiltmaking, allowing her to combine it with handwoven tartan to showcase both crafts. Jackie was taught by Scottish kiltmaker Paula Duncan, which enabled her to produce three hand stitched kilts for a man, woman and child using three different weights of tartan and four different pleating styles.
Teaching covered taking measurements, pleating methods, stitching, horsehair reinforcement, linings, buckles and accessories. In the long term, Jackie plans to develop more exhibition work, write a book and expand her workshops into organisations such as schools and care homes.
