Annabel Hood

2023 QEST Holberton Scholar - Silversmithing & engraving
Edinburgh

Annabel studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art and creates pieces focusing on clean design, tactile forms and surfaces textures. She is now looking to expand her traditional hand engraving skills, currently used on silver, to engrave on steel, specifically focusing on engraving British shotguns. There is a shortage of gun engravers in the UK and an urgent need to train young engravers to preserve this traditional craft.

Supported by a 2023 QEST Scholarship, Annabel will develop her skills in engraving on steel, through one-to-one training with master engraver Karen Wallace. She also plans to transfer the skills and patterns she learns in gun engraving to her silversmithing practice, allowing for more varied work in exhibition or bespoke commissions.

Engraving is such a special hand skill that can make pieces personal, catch the light in dramatic ways and create unique surface textures and patterns. Most of my inspiration comes from nature and the Scottish landscape, but I am very excited to develop my engraving skills for gun engraving and learn the traditional patterns that have been used on guns for hundreds of years.
